The potential in you

Monday, May 31st, 2010

My dad has an adopted sister who is really good in salon services kind of work. She doesn’t have a formal training and just picks up whatever she applies to clients from reference materials she reads. Imagine the untapped potential because there wasn’t an Arkansas Cosmetology School she could get into before.

With Regency Beauty Institute, men and women like my aunt could study the art of beauty. Learn and be trained on salon services right in school. Students are offering discounted salon services to the public as training. They are expertly supervised by the faculty. So they not only get to learn salon services, they also get to be trained to learn how big their potential is.

Go to RegencyBeauty.com and get into one of the fastest growing beauty schools in the country.

The Schultz Philosophy

Monday, May 31st, 2010

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the ‘Peanuts’ comic strip.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America pageant.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress..
6. Name the last decade’s worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here’s another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?

The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.

Don’t worry about the world coming to an end today. It’s already tomorrow in Australia. -Charles Schultz

Gain an Hour a Day

To find time for what truly matters…

20 Minutes at Work It takes a second to check if an email is urgent, but new mail sucks up time when you break concentration to answer each message. Stash nonurgent e-mails by clicking “reply,” then “save as draft”. Set a time to answer them later.

15 Minutes In The Kitchen Prep work can take longer than actual cooking. If you don’t want to buy pretrimmed veggies, take a tip from Rachel Ray’s “30 Minute Meals”: During lulls while making Sunday dinner, wash, trim and store produce for the week.

20 Minutes While You’re Out Whether going for a bite with friends or brown-bagging with a co-worker, set an end time when making dates. You’ll resist lingering, and it won’t seem rude when you get up to leave.

5 Minutes In the Car Engines warm up best while being driven, so no need to spend time sitting in the driveway with the motor idling.

Trust me, the one hour a day you saved can be spent in a more important matter, like talking to a love one, or saying hi to friends you haven’t talked to in a long time.

Could have been

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

When I saw Tamarindo, Costa Rica I know right away that it is a place my mom would have loved to live at. My mom was a very sociable person but most of the time she loved a calm and peaceful place. When I read that Tamarindo is a small peaceful beach town, I knew right away my mom would have been happy there. It is just too bad that she’s no longer here to enjoy looking at the Tamarindo Real Estate properties we could have acquired. I miss her still.

Go check out TamarindoRealtor.com now and make sure you check it with your mom.

The trail

trail

When I was a kid, there was this trail that my cousins and I always follow whenever we’re in the province. It leads to a river and back then, it was already a big mystery to us why the trail was not widely used by the residents of the place. Every nook and cranny of the province was a mystery for us to unravel. It brought us magic and adventure and lots of horror stories to tell!

I love that place. When I went back there a couple of years ago, the trail was still there but I was told the river was no longer there. It was developed into a residential area and that the trail leads to nowhere anymore.

Happy Mother’s Day!!!

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

mothers-day

To all the moms out there, Happy Mother’s Day to all of you! :)

Being a mother is a very gratifying full time job. I’ve seen my friends sad and happy when talking about their families, especially their kids. I could see their overflowing love for them. I can see them sacrificing every thing for their little ones. I know their capacity as moms and I salute them for that!

Enjoy your day! :)

Mom…

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

mum

I was so touched when I saw this postcard from PostSecret. And of course, it reminded me of my mom. My mom who I could no longer hug and tell I love her. My mom who was the best ally I ever had. My mom who loved me for who I was and never sided with other people but me.

I truly miss her. I wish she’s still with us…

Lost purpose

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Vertical Haven is supposed to be all about the memories of my mom. Not necessarily all about her but those things that trigger the memories to surface. And then some.

I honestly lost that purpose. This blog became an ad hoc of things about my childhood and a sprinkle of reviews I made to earn some web hosting money. It’s cool but I would like to bring back the reason why I created this blog in the first place. My mom’s memories…

Expect more entries about my childhood, my mom, and other things that make me think of a haven.
